Littered amongst the young and the beautiful collectors were old and beautiful antiques. It was quite a spectacle.
This high-energy night attracted over 650 new collectors, young philanthropists, interior designers, and art and antiques enthusiasts. Sponsored by New York magazine, Benjamin Moore, and Elie Tahari, the evening offered guests a private viewing of one of the world’s most prestigious antiques shows renowned for its unparalleled showcase of American, English, European, and Asian fine and decorative arts dating from antiquity through the 1960s.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KnxC93sGKY0/TzAx_fNqLkI/AAAAAAAAACI/3UpdNhGn1i8/s320/BFA_3342.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5706115694658727490" />

The evening aims to bring fresh eyes to the antiques scene. Many exhibitors were happy to chat about their wares and in many cases were more interested in educating patrons rather than making a sale. Proceeds from the evening went to the East Side House Settlement, a leading social services agency that serves young people and families in the South Bronx and surrounding communities.
For more information on next years event visit : www.eastsidehouse.org

He’s still got it!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 190px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cz8xLnR3Z2o/TyAxf97ezQI/AAAAAAAAABw/9GZ2jK6njNk/s320/16339.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701611553520798978" />
Actually, he’s got lots of things; Fabulous friends, fabulous accolades and LOTS of hair. Jealous?!

Last week Marty Richards celebrated his 80th birthday at the Reubin Museum. The party is best described as an event ‘crusted with celebrities’ or ‘encrusted with crusted celebrities’ (even though some of them were young). Many of us dread turning 80, but when your party is hosted by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas there’s little to complain about.

The birthday boy, best known as the producer of Chicago ( 2002 ), looked beautiful in a forest green embossed velvet blazer and despite his current battle with liver disease he looked the pinnacle of health.

In true Broadway style the party went on far too late. The Lonnie Youngblood Band were eventually shafted by an assortment of Broadway diva’s that made out like it was open mic night at Marie's Crisis. Everyone hobbled away smiling. Most of those teeth weren't original.

Aruna Seth and Her Royal Shoes

We loved meeting Aruna Seth and were totally amazed my her Royally divine shoe collection. In actual fact, the dancers of Swan Lake on Ice were truly dancing on a stage made of ICE, especially constructed for their touring season which commenced July 7th.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_rNXcqecCyy0/TEDXS4Z4atI/AAAAAAAAABE/aSqhRIGF6T4/s320/ring+of+fire.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494628264770562770" />

Roving Ryan (pictured right) was gifted some tickets to this spectacle and assuming I would be seated front row and center, I duly dressed like a Genus Cygnus for the opening night performance.
Although my seats were squinting distance from the stage I was able to appreciate what made this show so different from any I’d seen before. The frozen water gave the dancers a fluidity that Russian Ballet pioneer Jean-Baptiste Landé would applaud and the cleverly designed sets made a wonderful still-life distraction from the high octane ice sculpting happening in the milieu. A clever use of Scrims, a fly-by-wire swan, and a blazing ring of fire created a dramatic close for half time. Fire, Ice, it’s just a glass bottle and smutty campaign away from being a Revlon fragrance; but it had the audience gagging for Act two.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_rNXcqecCyy0/TEDYTUW6yHI/AAAAAAAAABU/PWJmOk7OdjU/s320/swans.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494629371785955442" />

It was unclear whether the cast were a flock of ballerinas gone bad or high class ice skaters who were fortuitous in their orientation. Integrity aside; the casting was a concern. It appeared the choreographic quality came second to crowd pleasing acrobatics. In place of a full set of standard sized skaters the show sported some micro-humans who could somersault through the legs of the other swans, and under stage props while spinning around like Kylie Minogue. At times it appeared like an Alaskan circus; but a thrill with a chill was going never going to sit entirely comfortably.
My only criticism is that the costumes we far from appropriate. I found them dull and predictable. In exchange for chiffon shroud, spangled winged, head dresses I recommend they employ sweat bands for the foreheads of cast members. This would save the skaters wiping their brows with the crotches of their co-stars, and prevent the apparent head to hip snags which riddled the entire performance.
When most gaggles fly south for the winter this limber bunch of sequined swans made the trip from a Russian summer to entertain New Zealand. We absolutely applaud them for their audacity, and recommend that you get along to the New Zealand tour of Swan Lake on Ice at a theatre near you. Someone decides to design a public sculpture made of Ice. Those someones were the fantastic designers at Moorhead & Moorhead for the Times Square Alliance, and the masters of ice from Okamoto Studio. The Ice Heart is a 10 foot tall heart constructed of masonry scaled blocks of ice. Kaleidoscopic in nature, the ice blocks pick up the lights, colors and activity of Times Square, feeding off its natural chaos.

I'm not sure whether it was the 10 foot tall gesture which had onlookers numb, or the arctic conditions which they were made to endure to be able to enjoy the sculpture. The cellars of city winery (at Vandam in Soho) were transformed into a cabaret theatre, with dinner service from 6pm, and the unveiling of talent from 8:30pm till 12.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_rNXcqecCyy0/S1npZef4YBI/AAAAAAAAAAM/9Xafzi27Dvs/s320/patti+and+lenny.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5429627449664626706" />

As the concert was organised in less than a week, and the performers were not confirmed in time for the publicity posters, the audience was in for a complete surprise as to who would be entertaining them for the evening. Consequently, the line-up of performers was extremely eclectic. The Patti Smith band performed a range of songs; a particular favourite was “because the night”, which Patti sang accompanied by her daughter on the piano. Oscar winning duo, The Swell Season, gave an amazing performance, only a day following their sell out concert at Radio City Music Hall. The very talented violinist, Joshua Bell, came straight from his rehearsal at the Lincoln centre to perform a preview of his show which airs on PBS later in the week. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_rNXcqecCyy0/S1nxY5KCz1I/AAAAAAAAAAc/oijCV_Rf7kQ/s320/joshua+Bell.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5429636235733946194" />
Despite being a rather diverse range of performers, the common interest in raising funds for Haiti, sounded a harmonious tone amongst the artists. As Patti Smith said, we should all “be grateful that we can entertain each other for the benefit of our fellow man”. It was a truly amazing evening and I recommend that you make it along if you can. Moma Mixx is a benefit dance party hosted by the junior associates of the museum of modern art and was the first in a series of events that pairs major artists with world renowned musicians and DJ's.

Moma's lobby was transformed into a dance floor and the vibrancy, color, and energy of the floorspace was in rivalry with the art. The predominantly young crowd danced away for hours to fantastic music by Hercules and Love Affair, ogled art by Mickalene Thomas and Derrick Adams whilst supping at the artistic contributions of the very talented bar staff.

Bopping, grinding, and tie swinging were not behaviors I'd ever expected from a Moma event... now i don't think I'll settle for less. Roller Derby is coming back in a big way and Roving Ryan had to get in on the action! The 'Gotham Girls Roller Derby All Stars' are the 2008 Women's Flat Track Roller Derby Association National Champions and are currently ranked #2 in the Eastern Region. They rolled out the red carpet for Roving Ryan and we had a crazy night filming them in all their knee-pad-clad glory.

The next Gotham Girls game will be October 24, 2009 at Hunter College. This post-Season showdown will feature 'The Brooklyn Bombshells' and 'The Queens of Pain' battling 'The Rat City Sockit Wenches' in a derby double header.
